(Reuters) - Des Linden may not be the favorite going into Sunday’s New York City Marathon but the gutsy American still has high hopes given that she knows better than most elite runners how quickly things could turn in her favor.

After a slew of near misses in top races, Linden enjoyed a career-defining moment at the 2018 Boston Marathon where she thrived under harsh conditions to become the first American woman in 33 years to win the prestigious race.

Breaking the soggy tape on Boylston Street remains the crowning moment of Linden’s career but the 36-year-old remains anything but complacent as she gets set to run through all five of New York City’s boroughs.

The Russian Athletics Federation says it's requested files from a regional competition this month in Siberia, where coach Vasily Shkurbitsky doubled as a competition referee.

A popular Russian track writer, Maxim Karamashev, earlier detailed what he said were major inconsistencies between preliminary results and final results sheets signed off by Shkurbitsky, which often served to make athletes he coached eligible for higher status in the Russian state sports system. Karamashev alleged the time of one athlete was slashed by over eight seconds for the 800 meters, a dramatic improvement.

Shiroyama's 8.40 m Jump Leads Four National Records at Athlete Night Games in Fukui

Held in the stadium where Japan saw its first-ever sub-10 clocking for 100 m, Saturday's new Athlete Night Games in Fukui meet produced four national records highlighted by an incredible men's long jump competition. Yuki Hashioka (Nihon Univ.) opened with a jump of 8.32 m +1.6 m/s that shattered the national record dating way back in 1992 by 7 cm. Hibika Tsuha (Toyo Univ.) followed him with a jump of 8.21 m + 2.0 m/s that put him into the all-time Japanese top three, then bettered that with an 8.23 m +0.6 m/s.



Out of nowhere, Shotaro Shiroyama (Zenrin) knocked them both back in the record books on his third jump with a new national record of 8.40 m +1.5 m/s, the #2 mark in the world so far this year and only his second time clearing 8 m with a legal wind. Japanese fans were quick to compare the trio's results to this season's Diamond League meets.

Nike Removes Contract Reductions for Pregnant Athletes After Backlash

Nike Executive Vice President of Global Sports Marketing John Slusher issued a letter to the company's sponsored athletes this week detailing changes that have been made to their respective contracts in an effort to support them through pregnancy.

Nike has faced criticism for its maternity policies since May, when The New York Times published an op-ed that featured Olympians Alysia Montano and Kara Goucher speaking about their former contracts with the sportswear giant which did not guarantee protection for pregnant athletes and new mothers.
